On October 5, 1949, Mary Jo Shannon and Robert Houghton welcomed Kris Jenner into this world in San Diego, California. Mary Jo and Robert Houghton divorced when Mary Jo was seven years old, resulting in Mary Jo and Karen Houghton being raised by their mother. In the end, Mary Jo Campbell remarried businessman Harry Shannon, who was instrumental in raising her and Karen Houghton.

Clairemont High School is where Kris Jenner went to school and graduated in 1973. Robert Houghton, her biological father, was killed in a car crash in 1975 when she was just nineteen years old. For a year in 1976, she was employed as a flight attendant for American Airlines.
