Calvin Harris’s father, biochemist David Wiles and his wife Pamela, are from Dumfries, Scotland, and he was born Adam Richard Wiles on January 17, 1984, where he was born. He was the youngest son of their three children. He was raised in Dumfries with his older siblings, Edward and Sophie, and attended Dumfries High School. In 1999, he began recording bedroom demos after developing an interest in electronic music as a teenager.

After a brief and unsatisfying stay in London, he returned to Dumfries and made solo recordings at home, posting them on his MySpace page. In the following year, he reworked the song ‘Rock Steady’, which was originally written by the English-Canadian girl group ‘All Saints’.
