Biography

In 1971, Jocko Willink was born to his parents John Gretton Willink Jr. and his birth date was September 8th. John was raised in Torrington, Connecticut with his two siblings.

In Torrington, a local school provided him with his primary and high school education training. Jocko participated in soccer during his high school years. After finishing high school, he started attending the University of San Diego and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English.

Personal Life

Helen Willink, whom Jocko Willink met while stationed in Bahrain, is now his wife. The family has four children, including three daughters named Freya, Rana, and Thorunn, and a son named Jocko Jr.

Career

Jocko Willink was initially trained as a Navy recruit and later attended Radioman (RM) “A” School training. In the following period, he enrolled in Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S) at Naval Amphibious Base Coronado and then proceeded to finish SEAL Tactical Training (STT). Upon completion of a six-month probation period, he was given permission to work as a Combatant Swimmer (SEAL).

The Silver Star and the Bronze Star were awarded to him for his bravery and leadership on the battlefield. In addition to his duties as an instructor and training officer at the Naval Special Warfare Center, he was responsible for developing and implementing the SEAL leadership training program. In 2010, he resigned from the Navy and started Echelon Front, a leadership consulting company that provides training, coaching, and mentoring to companies and organizations.

He also co-authors several books, such as Extreme Ownership and The Dichotomy of Leadership, with his fellow SEAL Leif Babin, based on their experiences and lessons learned in the military and business. Discipline Equals Freedom, Leadership Strategy and Tactics, and Way of the Warrior Kid were just some of the books he wrote, along with countless others.

In subsequent years, he wrote/co-wrote a number of other bestselling books including Discipline Equals Freedom: Field Manual(2017), The Dichotomy of Leadership: Balancing the Challenges of Extreme Ownership to Lead and Win(2018, with Leif Babin), Leadership Strategy and Tactics: Field Manual(2020) and The Code. The Evaluation. The Protocols: Striving to Becoming a Highly Qualified Person (2020, with Dave Berke and Sarah Armstrong).

Mikey and the Dragons (2018) and the three books in the Way of the Warrior Kid series (2017–2019, with Jon Bozak) were both written by him as children’s books.

In addition to running a leadership consulting firm, writing books and hosting a podcast, Jocko Willink is also the co-owner of Origin USA, a company that manufactures and sells products in lifestyle apparel, nutrition supplements and fitness equipment category. Furthermore, Willink holds the position of jiu-jitsu instructor at Victory MMA & Fitness, a martial arts establishment situated in San Diego, California.
