LaTocha’s family was musically inclined, so at six years old, she started singing in church, weddings, and local talent shows. By eleven, she had recorded her first song with her sister Tamika.

She completed her studies at Tri-Cities High School in East Point, Georgia and finished her studies in 1991.

Xscape was formed by Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and LaTocha and her sister Tamika during their high school days at Tri-Cities High School. Jermaine Dupri soon acquired them by signing them to So So Def Recordings.
