On October 15, 1981, in Oakland, California, Keyshia Myeshia Cole, who used to be Johnson, was born and raised by her biological parents, boxing trainer Virgil Hunter and Francine ‘Frankie’ Lons. Her surname Cole was given to her by family friends Leon and Yvonne Cole who adopted her at two years old.

In 2016, Cole met her biological father for the first time after being confirmed by a paternity test to be his child. Drug addiction problems continue to be a challenge for her biological mother.
