Career
Doncic’s first game with basketball was against his own age group at KK Olimpija, a club in Slovenia where his father was a player. In spite of everything, the coaches decided to move him to the under-11 level after 16 minutes. Doncic joined Olimpija’s under-14 team for practice soon after, but was unable to play in their games due to league rules, so he had to play with the club’s under-12 team.
Doncic was given temporary permission to play for Spanish club Real Madrid in the under-14 tournament in February 2012. Despite his team finishing second, he still managed to win tournament MVP. Doncic began playing for Real Madrid’s under-16 team immediately after signing a five-year contract with the club later that year, even though he was only 13.
He was moved up to the under-18 and Real Madrid reserve team for the 2014-15 season, helping the Real Madrid reserves win a championship in the fourth division of Spanish basketball.
At 16 years old, Doncic made his professional debut with Real Madrid’s first-team in Liga ACB in April 2015. He made history as the third-youngest player in league history, even though he only played in five games that season. Over the course of the next two seasons, Doncic gradually gained more of a role on the Real Madrid team. He played in 11 out of 42 games during the 2016-17 season and averaged 11.9 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
Doncic won EuroLeague MVP at the age of 18 and was later voted into the EuroLeague 2010-20 All-Decade Team. While also leading Real Madrid to the Liga ACB title, Doncic averaged 12.5 points per game.
The Atlanta Hawks took Doncic’s third overall pick in the 2018 NBA draft, but he was then traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Trae Young. During his time with the Mavericks, he established a record for the youngest 20-point scorer in franchise history and for making seven three-pointers in a game. His accomplishments did not end there. He went on to become the first teenager in NBA history to have a 30-point triple-double and multiple triple-doubles. While with the Mavericks, Doncic was awarded the NBA Rookie of the Year Award.
He became the first player in the NBA to have three triple-doubles in their first seven postseason games in 2021. The Dallas Mavericks reached the Western Conference Finals in 2021, but Luka Doncic led them to a 4-1 loss to the Golden State Warriors. The Dallas Mavericks were able to make it to the NBA Finals after 13 years in the 2023-24 season. Regrettably, the Mavs suffered a 4-1 loss against the Boston Celtics. Luka Doncic is now the sixth player in NBA history to lead his team in points, rebounds, and assists while making it to the NBA Finals.
Luka Doncic was given Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round pick as part of a trade with Los Angeles Lakers on February 1, 2025.
