Biography
Shakira was born on February 2, 1977, in the lively coastal city of Barranquilla, Colombia, where the streets were crowded with musical and laughing noise. Her father, William Mebarak Chadid, was a man of Lebanese descent who hailed from the bustling metropolis of New York City, while her mother, Nidia del Carmen Ripoll Torrado, came from a family of Catalan origin who had emigrated to Colombia in the 1800s. Her family consists of eight older half-siblings, which is quite large. Shakira is a multi-generational family consisting of three sisters: Patricia Mebarak, Lucy Mebarak, and Ana Mebarak, and six brothers: Antonio Mebarak, Tonino Mebarak, Alberto Mebarak, Moises Mebarak, Edward Mebarak, and Robin Mebarak.

She had a relationship with Antonio de la Rua, a lawyer, for several years before ending it in 2011.

Career
Shakira’s beginning as an artist was with her debut album, Magia (1990), which consisted of songs she had composed since she was eight years old. Although it wasn’t a financial success, the record was nonetheless an important milestone in her career. ‘Estoy Aqu’and ‘Pies Descalzos, Sue os Blancos’ were the hits of her breakout album Pies Descalzos (1995). The success of this record led her to stardom in Latin America and Spain.
In 1996, she returned to the music industry with her third album ‘Pies Descalzos.’ The album produced six hit singles and was given positive reviews by critics. ‘Tour Pies Descalzos’ was a tour she took to promote her album. In 1998, she released her second album, ‘Donde Estan los Ladrones?’. The music incorporated elements of rock in Spanish and was characterized by Latin Pop style. One of the most well-received Spanish language albums in the U.S. was the album. Over seven million copies were sold worldwide.
‘Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1’ is the name of her Spanish album which was released in June 2005. The release of the English album ‘Oral Fixation, Vol. 2’ occurred in November following it. The latter’s single ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ peaked at the top of the U.S. charts. She made it to the Billboard Hot 100′ and it became her signature song. In 2009, her album ‘She Wolf’ was released. March 25, 2014 marked the release of Shakira’s tenth studio album.
